
The Research Institute for Health Sciences (RIHES) was formally constituted as part of Chiang Mai University in 1978 and is mandated to conduct biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and behavioral research on priority public health topics of concern to the northern population and its neighboring countries. The director is professor Thira Sirisanthana. The Prevention Infection for Men clinic (PIMAN) was established in 2007 for conducting prevention HIV interventions in men who have sex with men (MSM) including iPrEx.

Dr. Suwat Chariyalertsak is an associate professor in
the Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University
and deputy director of the Research Institute for Health Sciences (RIHES).
After receiving his MD from Mahidol University in 1980, Dr. Suwat continued
his MSc in clinical tropical medicine at Mahidol University and; a MPH
in Health System management at Tulane University (1992) and a DrPH in Infectious
Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University (1996). Dr. Suwat is working in
HIV/AIDS prevention and clinical trial research since 2000. He is currently
the local principal investigator of a serodiscordant couples study (HPTN
052) and a phase III RCT of community mobilization, mobile testing and
post test support for HIV in Thailand.
