The Faculty of Medicine of the Sao Paulo University (FMUSP) was created in 1912. The faculty has 4 disciplines (Medicine, Physiotherapy, Phono-audiology, and Occupational Therapy) and 27 masters and doctorate programs and degrees.

The FMUSP-CH (Central Hospital) is the largest university health service in Brazil and in 2007 it saw 2.5 million patients in different areas. On the other hand, the Faculty has 17 departments, 350 faculties and 600 officers.

    The system includes:
  • - A hospital complex consisting of one general hospital and seven institutes of high complexity (tertiary complexity), two general hospitals devoted to secondary complexity, two backup hospitals and one unit devoted to the comprehensive treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • - The University Hospital of medium complexity is responsible for attending local communities.
  • - The Butanta School Health Center is responsible of working on primary care in the surrounding communities.
  • - The Tropical Medicine Institute is a specialized research and teaching center in infectious diseases.
  • - There are 63 research laboratories in almost every health field.

The FMUSP-HC is responsible for 7,27% of all of the scientific production in Brazil.

Dr. Kallas is a medical doctor graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sao Paulo. Dr. Kallas is also professor at the Federal University of Sao Paulo where he is the chief of the Immunology Laboratory at the infectious diseases core. His research is oriented to the application of basic sciences on clinical practice with emphasis on HIV, HTLV, CMV, herpes virus, and viral and bacterial hepatitis. Esper Kallas is Principal Investigator of the Sao Paulo Clinical Trials Unit sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This unit is a research center on candidate HIV vaccines. At present he is the local investigator for the iPrEx study at University of Sao Paulo as part of an international consortium to assess a new pre-exposure prophylaxis strategy for HIV prevention using antiretroviral medications.
