The Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) that oversees the conduct of the iPrEx trial had its fourth meeting last November 3rd in Washington DC, United States. The DSMB found that the iPrEx study is being conducted according to plan and recommended that the study continue.
A DSMB is an independent committee comprised of clinical research experts, biostatisticians, ethicists, and community representatives from Peru, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand and the United States, that periodically reviews the study to ensure:
• The continued safety of study participants;
• The relevance of the study question, and the appropriateness of the study;
• That study objectives can be achieved (feasibility/futility);
• That any benefits shown in the study are quickly identified and can be made available to all participants; and
• The integrity of the accumulated data
The iPrEx DSMB will meet again in May of 2010. We will keep you posted.
